This only applies if you have a landline. Criminals call and try their sales pitch, then tell you to hang up and call a number they give you. The number isn’t real and what they do is keep your landline open so that it sounds like they are answering the call you just made when in fact they never hung up and are continuing your call as though you called them. the goal is to convince you that you have called them and you are safe giving them your credit card. The number they give you to call is fake.

If you look it up yourself, and then you do call a number listed online for a company you have heard of, you should be able to trust the person you speak with.
